Apex Pest Control has announced that it has now released important information for anyone who has a rat problem. How to get rid of rats is a matter of great concern to anyone who is suffering from a rat infestation and Apex has outlined the necessary steps to be taken to address the problem.

Rats usually appear during the late summer as autumn approaches and this is when most people will discover that there is an infestation. Rats can cause a lot of damage to a property whether it is commercial or residential and they can enter through incredibly small holes. In fact, a rat can get through a 20 mm hole.

Once inside rats can cause a lot of damage. Rats like to gnaw on just about any material. Their strong teeth can chew through materials such as aluminum, brick, cinder block, glass, wood, and even sheet metal. Pipes, wiring, ducts, almost anything in a property is not safe. And, of course, they are quite happy to eat any food they find whether it is human or pet in origin.

It is not just the physical damage that is a problem, however. Rats can and do carry multiple diseases. The best known and most publicized is Weil's disease which is a form of leptospirosis and this can be contracted by coming into contact with the urine of infected rats. Cuts and scratches can put a person at risk of the bacteria getting into their body. Unknowingly touching a contaminated area and then eating, for example, lets the bacteria in through the mouth.

It is not just Weil’s disease that poses a risk though. Rats were thought to be the origin of the black death – an epidemic of bubonic plague. Although the plague is extremely rare and has mostly disappeared it has not been eradicated. Rats pose a more modern-day threat as apart from Weil’s rats can also carry and spread cryptosporidiosis, E.Coli, foot and mouth disease, salmonella, and tuberculosis. Rats are a physical danger to both humans and animals.

Once rats get in your property there is really no time to lose. The longer a property owner waits the more damage rats can do. If the rats are nesting and breeding it is a sobering thought to realise that each female may produce from 3 to 12 litters of between six and eight young in a year.

John Ellison, a spokesperson for Apex Pest Control, said, “People don’t realise that a single breeding pair can turn into a major infestation in the blink of an eye. It’s not always obvious there are rats at first, but the signs are usually there if people watch out for them. Anyone who might suspect they have a rat problem should contact a professional exterminator immediately for a property inspection.”

Signs that a property may have rats can include droppings, holes, damaged foodstuffs, footprints, foul smells, wiring or wood that has been gnawed, nests, and scratching noises. Rats are extremely agile climbers and as they move around and it is often possible to hear scratching noises, particularly at night.
