This was after some 38 million people hit the road at the official start of the summer travel season.
Jim Butler, founder and owner of Butler's Tire & Accessories, says: "You can really tell that the economy is recovering, with an extra 700,000 people hitting the road compared to last year. Plus, gas prices are really low and that made a difference as well. In Pensacola, the average gas price stands at $2.32 per gallon, which means people can really afford to travel."
Around 90% of summer travelers use their vehicles to go to their destinations. In fact, Pensacola itself is known as a 'drive to' destination. The result of this is that there is also an increase in people looking for the best new tires Pensacola has to offer. "People have been driving over to Pensacola for anything from a day trip to a week's vacation," adds Butler. "This also means that traffic has been quite crazy and there have been too many people who were unprepared, driving significant distances on worn tires. Luckily, we had increased our stocks in order to be able to serve their need for tires."
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), some 350,000 motorists had to be rescued over the Memorial Day weekend alone, with flat tires being one of the main concerns. Butler's Tire & Accessories is working closely with the AAA in order to ensure that people are safe while they travel. "Once summer hits, people seem to become a bit blinded by the nice weather and the prospect of a nice day out," observes Butler.
