June 23, 2016 - PRESSADVANTAGE -

Hudson Valley, New York resident and Jazz Singer Teri Roiger announces her GoFundMe campaign to finish the production and release of her upcoming new CD release "Billie 101: A Tribute To Billie Holiday".

Over the past few years, crowdfunding has become a very popular way anyone can raise funds for anything. The process is simple: get the cause or idea up on a platform like GoFundMe, Kickstarter, or any one of the major platforms, and then make sure as many people as possible know about it.

Many new musical offerings have come to the light of day through people contributing financially in small and large ways to give independent artists the opportunity to get their otherwise unheard work out into the world.

Jazz Vocalist and Educator Teri Roiger is doing just that. She has created a GoFundMe campaign for her new recording “Billie 101: A Tribute To Billie Holiday", her heartfelt tribute to Ms. Holiday celebrating Lady Day’s 101st birth year.

The title of the CD recognises Billie Holiday's 101 year of birth and celebrates Teri Roiger's performing and jazz education career. Roiger has been teaching Vocal Jazz, History of Jazz, and Vocal Jazz Ensembles for the past 17 years at SUNY (State University of New York) New Paltz (New Paltz, NY).

"Billie 101: A Tribute To Billie Holiday" is Roiger's fourth jazz record as a bandleader. This special tribute reflects Roiger's commitment to her life in jazz and credits Holiday as the initial spark that began her career in music, and this unique American art form, Jazz.

On this multi-dimensional project, Ms. Roiger's arrangements feature Steve Gorn's Bansuri Flute and African Percussion Master Abdou Mboup. With the addition of these unusual musical elements, the music takes on a exotic emotional flavor. The choice of material relflects Roiger's long time associaltion with Lady Day’s music and legacy by showing the many facets of Billie Holiday. Referencing Holiday's ebullient joy, her rebellious spirit, her rich sensuality, and the depth of her blues feeling, Roiger's style meshes artistically with Holiday's spirit.

Included in the recording are songs made famous by Ms. Holiday, songs written by Ms. Holiday, and some very moving songs about Ms. Holiday (including one penned by Roiger titled “Lady Day,”). Also in the mix is a swinging rendition of Gil Scott-Heron's 1970s underground hit “Lady Day and John Coltrane.”

Over many years of performing in the US and Internationally, Ms. Roiger has built a fine reputation as a singer (and pianist) of profound musicality and depth of heart. Her three recordings, DEAR ABBEY (The Music of Abbey Lincoln), STILL LIFE, and MISTERIOSO have each met with critical acclaim, as have her live performances at festivals and at top New York jazz spots such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Smoke, and Kitano Jazz, where she performs regularly.

"Ms. Roiger's talent shines through in an inarguable fashion…her notes, her swing, her sound, and her all encompassing soulfulness...she has all of the essence that anyone wants to hear anytime from a true jazz singer." STANLEY CROUCH (Noted Jazz writer)

The recording features the following stellar musicians: John Menegon (bass & amp; arrangements), Wayne Hawkins (piano), Steve Williams (drums) with special guests Jay Collins (baritone & amp; tenor sax), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Steve Gorn (clarinet & amp; bansuri flute), Rebecca Coupe-Franks (trumpet), Mark Dziuba (guitar), Abdou Mboup (percussion).

Funds raised will be used to mix, master, finish the graphic design, pay for publishing rights, manufacturing, and promotion.
