A&P Properties of NW FL, a business that offers condo rentals in Pensacola Beach, Florida, has found that Hurricane Hermine actually increased their business. In previous years, approaching hurricanes and tropical storms would lead to a dip, with various holidaymakers cancelling their rentals just before the event. For this year, however, it seems that the surfing community in particular was ready for the storm.
Jeff Powell from A&P Properties says: "When we heard of the approaching tropical storm, which eventually became a hurricane, we braced ourselves for a drop in revenue because that was what happened in the past. However, this year, we were surprised to see that we had very few cancellations, and those few cancellations that we did have were instantly snapped up by people who actually wanted to come here."
Lifeguards in Pensacola Beach raised the red flags when Hermine was approaching as a warning to keep people out of the water. However, with many of the beach condo rentals in Pensacola having gone to the surfer community, these warnings were mainly ignored. That said, the surfers did notice that the surf wasn't as clean as they would have liked it to be, with the sea being incredibly rough, so much so in fact, that some novice surfers decided to ride it out.
"Surfers are always out chasing that perfect wave, and the conditions in Pensacola Beach when Hermine was due to hit were near perfect," adds Jeff Powell. "However, the wind needed to shift just that little bit more, so that the waves would have gotten more organized and bigger. Unfortunately, it was a slight disappointment for surfers, who didn't get that perfect wave, and tourists, who couldn't enjoy the sea."
That said, many people who had rented condos and were not there for surfing enjoyed sitting on the beach to watch those who did brave the waves. The Gulf is known for its calm, crystal clear waters, so it was unusual to see it in that state. Other than the big surf, the hurricane did not have a major impact on the area and tourists enjoyed fine Pensacola Beach dining with views of something a little bit different for a change.
