As a dog owner part of the job is protecting the family from the parasites that can plague dogs and make their lives, and the family's, miserable.

Churchcroft Veterinary Centre in Chilwell, Beeston, Nottingham have decided to do something about it. In conjunction with Broxtowe Borough Council they are sponsoring refuse bins. The bins have a bold sticker asking if dogs are worm free. The council have a legal duty to keep certain types of land which come under its control clear of dog faeces as far as is practicable. It is the responsibility of the dog owner or the person in charge of a dog to clean up any dog foul left by their dog. This applies to all public open land in the Borough of Broxtowe.

Senior vet George Packer said, “Years ago we used to combat external parasite infestations with shampoos and medicated collars. Now there are a number of far more effective treatments, not only for flea and tick control, but for internal parasites too. However, what’s best for one dog isn’t necessarily right for another.”

To make it fun over the summer they ran a photo competition to see who could have the cutest dog photo next to one of the bins. The winner was recently announced as Bailey Smith, a gorgeous St Bernard not yet a year old.

On a serious note there are many ways that dogs can get worms. They are often found eating things off the parklands, rolling in the dirt, coming into contact with carriers such as snails, licking bottoms and even eating faeces. These habits put them at risk of developing worms including hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms and lung worm.

These worms may lead to significant illness such as diarrhoea, vomiting and anaemia. Many of the worms that dogs get are transmissible to humans, particularly children, who also have a habit of touching unusual things and putting their fingers in their mouths and not effectively washing their hands.

So, the best and safest move is to get the vet’s input about keeping dogs worm and parasite-free.
