The new article from Pharr Road Animal Hospital lists a number of common ingredients in dog treats which are unhealthy for dogs. Treats are used for good behavior, but should not include items which can be harmful.
Atlanta GA: Pharr Road Animal Hospital is pleased to announce the release of their new article which details “What to Avoid in Healthy Dog Treats.” The list of ingredients in dog foods can be harmful to pets and should be avoided. Each of the items can be found in dog treats and dog foods, so reading the labels carefully is the best plan when choosing the types of food items which are provided to the dog.
The list of items includes sugar, salt, dairy, soy, grain, and chocolate. The issues with each of the ingredients is described in understandable terms. Avoiding the substances completely will result in an animal which is healthier and has a better quality of life, the article states. Avoiding problems with the heart, skin, joints, and liver are some of the benefits which accrue when the pet is fed a completely healthy diet.
The article also talks about how sugar is bad for both pets and humans. It has no nutritional value. It can cause various health issues in the pet, including obesity, allergies, hypoglycemia, tooth decay, arthritis, and cataracts. When checking the treat label, avoid products with ingredients such as sucrose, corn syrup, and caramel which are all sugar substitutes. Excess salt can lead to an increased heart rate, increased water intake, and restlessness.
Dairy products for some dogs can be a cause for allergies and sensitivities. Some humans use soy as a replacement for meat, but for dogs the health benefits are limited and some dogs can be allergic to it. The vet recommends avoiding soy completely.
Grain products can cause dogs to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Chocolate contains a substance called Theobromine. It is absorbed slowly in dogs and can cause a toxic reaction which can be deadly to the pet. Checking with the vet about any questionable items is recommended.
