TheProductLawyers.com reports on an article by the New York Post stating that a Long Island woman has opted to file a lawsuit claiming Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder caused ovarian cancer.
The article states that the Long Island woman is suing Johnson & Johnson claiming that 50 years of using its talcum powder gave her ovarian cancer. She said she had been applying the powder since 1960 and was diagnosed in November 2013. She has since had to undergo several treatments, the article said.
Hers is among nearly 2,000 lawsuits filed in the U.S. against the pharmaceutical giant. These lawsuits make similar claims, alleging that the products are not only linked to cancer but that the company did nothing to warn consumers when faced with evidence that the powders cause cancer. Lawsuits have accused the company of fraud and negligence among several others.
So far, three major lawsuits have ended with Johnson & Johnson being made to pay millions of dollars to plaintiffs. Johnson & Johnson is looking to appeal the decisions and has stood by its stance that they “follow the science” and that their products are not dangerous. While some studies suggest that a link exists between ovarian cancer and talcum powder, other studies have found evidence inconclusive.
