According to the article, “AstraZeneca's Lynparza tablets substantially delayed the recurrence of ovarian cancer in women compared with a placebo, according to results of a Phase 3 patient study.” The drug is already approved in the US for the treatment of patients with BRCA-mutated metastatic ovarian cancer and the company is looking to expand the label to include it as a maintenance therapy for ovarian cancer.
These developments are especially important to many women in the US as lawsuits continue to be filed over the alleged link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder. Lawsuits against the pharmaceutical giant now total near 2,000. These cases all claim that the company marketed and sold products knowing that they were linked to cancer. These cases began in 2009 with a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and have since spurred thousands of others. Johnson and Johnson has adamantly denied claims that their products cause cancer and has not issued any warnings about them as a result.
Over the past 40 years, numerous studies have been done on the alleged link between talcum powder and cancer. While some studies have found a connection, others have found none. Despite the split in the evidence, three juries have found that a link does exist and have awarded plaintiffs with millions in compensation. Meanwhile, two similar cases were thrown out in New Jersey by a judge who stated that there was a lack of scientific evidence to support the plaintiffs’ claims.
