He also works with numerous churches, and helps them keep their pianos in tune for Sunday services and special concerts.
On his website, SouthernPianoService.com, Bendall just published an article about the special challenges faced by churches when it comes to keeping their pianos in optimal condition.
What many people don't realize is that pianos that are exposed to fluctuations in temperatures and humidity will have to be tuned much more often than those that are not exposed to those conditions.
Pianos in private homes are generally kept in a stable environment when it comes to temperature and humidity. However, this is not the case when it comes to pianos in churches.
During Sunday services, the temperature will be adjusted so it is comfortable for the congregation. However, during much of the week, this is not the case. In summer, most churches will be hot and humid much of the time - until the A/C kicks in during services and events. In winter, most churches will be cold instead. This poses special challenges for church piano tuning.
Of course providing A/C or heat only when it's needed makes sense from an environmental and financial point of view, but everything has a price. In the case of pianos in churches, the price will be additional piano tunings to compensate for the destabilizing effects of the ever-changing temperature.
Bendall also counts many schools among his clients, and he points out that schools face similar challenges. "Temperature fluctuations are also a major challenge for pianos in schools, since the facilities are kept heated or cooled during regular school hours," says Bendall. At night and on weekends, they will be hot during the summer, and cold during the winter. In addition to getting a lot of use, these temperature fluctuations also make it necessary to tune school pianos fairly frequently.
Bendall also mentions that new clients often ask about piano tuning cost as well as piano moving cost. He points out that his rates are highly competitive and invites churches and private parties to call or text him to discuss this issue. He can be reached at 804-677-2416.
The best way to get in touch is by sending him a text message. His website is http://southernpianoservice.com, and more information about church piano tuning is here: http://southernpianoservice.com/church-piano-tuning-and-repair.
