June 01, 2015 - PRESSADVANTAGE -
Hawaii tile mural artist, Thomas Deir, known for public tile murals will unveil his largest hand-painted tile mural on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the grand opening of a new seafood eatery, Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Market, LLC.
Located in the Rainbow Bazaar, Hilton Hawaiian Village. The restaurant’s grand opening begins at 5 p.m., the unveiling event will be at 7:00 p.m. The 200 square-foot mural was commissioned to attract and help to retain customers. The design elements include undersea reef and marine life; it measures 40 feet wide by 5 feet high and spans three walls.
When entrepreneur, Marshall Sakaguchi, commissioned Thomas Deir to create tile murals for his new seafood restaurant, he had a strategy in mind. “The first time I saw a Thomas Deir tile mural I realized the potential and tested it at my Ala Moana Food Court location,” said Sakaguchi. “Our food is delicious – we get compliments all of the time, but I wanted to add something extra, something memorable for customer retention. The murals create a unique experience for our customers and they remember the ‘fish’ murals. The goal is to attract new customers and to have them come back because they enjoyed their experience. Now with the new restaurant located in the visitor industry environment our goal is to have customers return before they check out of the hotel.”
Sakaguchi asked Thomas Deir to create the tile murals and design the restaurant interior. “Mr. Sakaguchi pretty much left the design decisions up to me,” said Deir. “The restaurant’s interior shape lends itself to a surround-style design. I specified the floor and counter materials along with the wall color to complement the tile mural design. I don’t want to talk about the actual design too much before the unveiling, except to say it is a reef fish themed mural and it’s taken me six months to complete this hand-painted custom tile mural.

In 2014, Sakaguchi commissioned Deir to design his new food establishment in the Ala Moana Food Court. The design included two marine-life tile murals. In 1991 the Hilton Hawaiian Village acquired one of the artist’s tile murals, Rainbow Reef, it is on display at the Rainbow Tower facing the Super Pool.
