What is Genetic Identifies Dominant Genetic Traits of the Ultra-Rich

June 02, 2015 - PRESSADVANTAGE -

Last week, the online genetics reference and science news site "What is Genetic" (also known as W.I.G.) released their findings in a study of the most common genes associated with wealth.  The report, entitled "How to Genetically Engineer Your Children to be Rich" discussed the most current research in the fields of Genoeconomics, which is the study of genes and heredity on economic status.  Their results may greatly influence future genetic testing and change the definition of heredity as it relates to wealth.

Not surprisingly, genes related to entrepreneurship ranked highly on the list, as the current economy has made it far more likely for business owners to be extremely wealthy in comparison to other highly paid professions. But the study states you don't have to be an entrepreneur to be rich.  Attributes such as curiosity, being a morning person, and even modesty ranked highly for wealth building.

"It's not just the genes that are important," said R. Chandler Brown, the author of the genetics study who compiled the research.  "You have to turn the right genes on as well.  That is the role of epigenetics."

Brown explains in the findings that epigenetics, the study of the mechanisms that turn gene expression on or off, is essential to wealth creation. The right behaviors can cause a gene associated with being rich to be regulated up or down in the DNA. This means that the genes have to be encouraged within an individual.  In other words, the environment plays a direct impact on which genes become active traits.

For example, Brown pointed out that even though some attributes like beauty are hereditary traits that can bring wealth, other psychological attributes like confidence and perseverance are much better determiners of wealth. The latter can be greatly influenced by trained behaviors and the environment, meaning that there is hope for those not born with all the best genes.  Success can be learned.

What advice does Brown give for parents who want to ensure their children have the best possible chance of being wealthy?

“The sweet spot for having wealthy children is no longer a mystery,” added Brown in a recent interview.  “The right genes play a crucial role, but the right environment plus the right habits equals the highest chance for success.”
