William & Keats Publishing announced today that Lee Wilson, author of Amazon bestseller, "The Last Hybrid: Bloodline of Angels," has become one of the first authors ever to merge an ebook and film. After a full year of production, he re-released the e-book version, this time including selected scenes from the book, which have been professionally filmed. These videos are embedded into the e-book itself, or are linked to if the device used to read does not support embedded videos. This is a brand new concept in literature that effectively merges films and books. It is one of the first of its kind available today.
Wilson, an actor who has starred in SAG films and appeared opposite Brandi Carlile in her music video "Turpentine," plays a lead character named Daniel in "The Last Hybrid" himself.
According to Wilson, "I’ve always heard that directors don’t want the writer on set, but in this case, I was there nearly every second. The director, Earl Wells, wanted my input as the author on how things sounded. If I didn’t feel a scene was believable or true to the book the way someone had delivered it, we’d run it again. But that was very rare with this cast. I felt like I was seeing the living version of the book."
Future film-enhanced e-books are planned for "The Last Hybrid," creating a paranormal romance series. This will be done through "FilmRead Productions," the newly formed company behind the production. Although a brand new concept, it is already being very well-received, which is obvious from the reviews on The Last Hybrid's Facebook page. Putting videos into books might seem sacrilegious to some, but Lexi Blevins, who starred as Hannah, thinks that this new type of book will actually draw more people to reading.
According to Blevins, "I am dyslexic. So growing up, reading was really difficult for me. I think this new concept of literature is really going to encourage kids and adults to read more because it is more engaging and helps with visualization while still allowing readers to use their imagination."
As a new concept, authors such as Wilson are seeing it as a completely new way to deliver literature. One of the issues with books themselves, or film adaptations, is that it is never entirely clear what the author actually envisioned when writing the book. There is always an element of interpretation. With this new method, however, readers will have the opportunity to effectively see through the eyes of the author and experience the book closer to how it was meant to be experienced above and beyond what they can see on the book's website.
"The idea kind of leaked that we were doing a film-enhanced version of the book and some fans were wanting me to post pictures of the actors chosen to play certain characters," added Wilson. "They also wanted to know how close the actors came to looking like and portraying my vision of their characters. I'll say that we auditioned large numbers of people for each part and it was spooky how the people we chose looked like I envisioned the characters. You're basically seeing them as I imagined, as though I dreamed them into life."
