The conference brought together a collective of athletic trainers, coaches, sports physicians and other allied medical personnel that work closely with the athletes.
There is concern amongst the medical community that football related injuries are not receiving the coverage needed to propel the issue into the national spotlight. The goal of the conference is to not only raise awareness of football related injuries, but also to educate the sports community on the severity of the issue.
Dan Vega proudly accepted the opportunity to work with Dr. James Andrews, an expert in the field who is internationally known and recognized for his work as an orthopedic surgeon and for his research contributions in the areas of knee, shoulder and elbow injury prevention and treatment, to tackle the mission of spreading awareness for football related injuries. “Creating clear lines of communication with the community is a crucial step in building awareness and creating a safer environment for our beloved athletes. I am honored to be working alongside Dr. Andrews to increase awareness and bring these issues into conversations across the country,” Vega stated.
Michael Lewis, a former record-setting NFL player who is currently the team ambassador for the New Orleans Saints, interviewed with Vega during the conference as well. Lewis spoke from first hand experiences that stemmed from his career in the NFL where he set the NFL record for combined kick-punt return yardage in 2002. Lewis discussed the physical and mental repercussions that players may face after their NFL career’s and stated a few ideas on preventative safety rules that the league could possibly implement moving forward.
While the issue of sports related injuries in football is not a simple problem to solve, the dedication of medical professionals and advocates continue to bring everyone closer to a solution that will keep athletes safe.
