Calgary, Canada based nutritional supplements company Nutriden Inc. has released a list of the best nutritional tips for maintaining bone health as a part of their osteoporosis awareness campaign.
Bones play a necessary role in the human body as they provide structure, protect the internal organs, and store the body's required calcium intake. According to Tom Schumlich, President at Nutriden Inc., "Because of the critical role played by our bone structure in everyday living and health, it is very important to replenish the body with the right kinds of nutrients and supplements to make sure that optimum bone strength is maintained."
Dr. Peter Selby, an osteoporosis expert based at Manchester Royal Infirmary explains, "the skeleton is constantly replacing itself. Old bone is broken down by cells called osteoclasts and replaced by bone-building cells known as osteoblasts. At any one time, we have a mixture of old and new bone as the turnover rates differ throughout the body."
To promote healthy bone growth, the two key nutrients a body needs are calcium and vitamin D. Adults up to age 50 require 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 200 international units (IUs) of vitamin D a day. Adults over 50 need 1,200 milligrams of calcium and 400 to 600 IU of vitamin D per day.
To fulfill these dietary requirements, food items rich in calcium and vitamin D need to be a part of one's daily diet. Dairy products such as yogurt are a great option - one serving of yogurt contains up to 30% of the recommended daily intake of calcium and 20% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D. One serving of milk also contains the same amount of calcium, but it lacks the vitamin D required for optimal absorption of the calcium. Cheese is another dairy product that's rich in calcium but its high-fat content makes it unsuitable for daily consumption.
There are some fish that can also help fulfill these dietary requirements - a 3-ounce piece of sockeye salmon contains more than 100% of the daily recommended dose of vitamin D while sardines have high levels of both calcium and vitamin D. These nutrients can also be absorbed from plant based foods. One cup of cooked spinach contains 25% of the daily recommended intake of calcium. Collard greens also have the same amount of calcium as spinach and are great for maintaining bone health.
Ultimately, the right combination of diet and exercise can help people prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis in their old age. To learn more about bone health and osteoporosis, visit Nutriden Inc's official website or check out its storefront at the Amazon Marketplace.
