Ali Rangwala Tells Anyone Trying to Lose Weight, Your Metabolism is Fine

June 11, 2015 - PRESSADVANTAGE -

Ali Rangwala today announced concerns about media coverage of the recent ‘thrifty metabolism’ study, stating that it could have highly detrimental effects on people who have a history of difficulty with losing weight.

The study, led by Dr. Martin Reinhardt of the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, had the researchers conclude that some people may find it more difficult to lose weight than others due to a difference in their metabolic response to calorie restriction.

It should go without saying that, like everything else, not all metabolisms are created equal. It would be strange if we all lost weight at the same rate. Just because some people find it more difficult to lose weight than others is not to say that there is a critical issue with their metabolism, and that they are unable to lose weight outright. This is precisely the issue Rangwala takes with the recent media coverage.

He stated, “Dr Reinhardt is to be commended for making clear in his release that ‘biology is not destiny.’ Unfortunately, many media outlets have exploited this story, choosing to run with a sensationalist ‘confirmation of your worst suspicions’ piece to gain maximum interest. It’s likely that many people who do not have a ‘thrifty’ metabolism, or indeed a serious metabolic issue of any kind, will take this story as a prompt to give up their pursuit of a healthy weight.”

Many people mistakenly suspect that the main cause of their lack of weight loss success is an issue with their metabolism. This problem was already very common, and previous studies have confirmed that this belief is completely false in the vast majority of people who have it. But it’s an extremely dangerous belief to have because it causes people to divert their attention and efforts from where it is most needed to where it does no good at all. Instead of addressing the issues that cause them to have difficulty eating less and exercising more, they waste their energy lamenting about their genetics, which they imagine to be inferior.

They conclude that they are ‘supposed’ to be overweight. This can be a very compelling notion in light of their personal evidence. Multiple failed attempts to lose weight, and repeatedly putting weight back on after it is lost can have a cumulative effect in convincing a person that it isn’t possible for them to have a healthy weight. But the reality is that obesity wasn’t a common problem until very recently. Its causes are overwhelmingly cultural. The idea that anyone is predestined to be obese is a fallacy.

Rangwala went on to say, “Metabolic ward studies repeatedly show that even those with the strongest suspicions that they have a slow metabolism actually have no such problem. The most common cause of this mistaken belief is underestimation of what the individual himself is eating, and overestimation of what his in-shape friends are eating. Creating clarity in these areas and moving past these issues is straightforward, and must be a part of any worthwhile weight loss program.”
