San Antonio, TX: Each year, more and more people are inspired by the spirit and compassion of the people behind the “Man and Woman of the Year” competition. Candidates in this charitable campaign compete not just for the title but for one great purpose – to fight cancer.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s President and CEO Louis J. DeGennaro said, “For these influential individuals, it’s not just about the title, it’s all about the impact they are making in their communities for LLS.”
One of this year’s San Antonio candidates, Dr. Kirsten Smith raised $197,869 for her LLS Woman of the Year campaign and was named the LLS Woman of the Year Runner-Up for San Antonio. Supporting her in this effort was longtime friend Melissa Wiggans, broker and owner of Real Estate Muses. Real Estate Muses hosted a community secure shredding event for neighbors and friends of the 78209 communities including Northwood, Northridge and Oakwell Farms neighborhoods. This event raised donation money for the campaign and offered in exchange an opportunity for community members to securely dispose of personal documents with onsite destruction. Throughout the campaign, Melissa Wiggans and the Real Estate Muses also sponsored and helped with different events, including a self-defense course, skeet shoot, and art auction.

Melissa Wiggans shares a spirit of compassion as she says, “We are so proud to have been able to help. We would like to thank all our friends and clients who helped in this philanthropic event.”
Together, candidates and influential people across the country give so much of themselves to support the LLS mission.
“They’re unstoppable in their desire to find cures for blood cancers and are driven to reach their own personal fundraising best,” says Andrew Coccari, LLS Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer. “They’re not only competing for the title, they’re competing to beat blood cancer,” he added.
Candidates compete for the National Title “Man and Woman of the Year” in honor of young blood cancer survivors, Devan and Susanna, both 11 years of age.
This prestigious competition has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to help advance research for blood cancers including leukemia and lymphoma. They support the LLC mission to support patients and ensure they have access to treatments.
Ultimately, their goal is to improve the quality of lives of the patients and their families.
“The money that we raise truly saves lives, and if I can’t share that enough, I don’t know what else I can do, because it saved my life,” says Amy Eberhardt.
This event is the voice of cancer patients seeking access to quality care. Anyone can become an advocate and a champion of hope for them.
