ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases -10th Revision-Clinical Modification) is a US clinical modification of the World Health Organization's ICD-10, developed to support US health information needs. While most industrialized countries moved to ICD-10 a number of years ago, the United States is just now transitioning with a final compliance date of October 1, 2015. The healthcare industry is facing major changes. Until now, ICD-9 has been the coding classification system used by healthcare facilities to code diseases and procedures to submit for reimbursement. Now, however, ICD-10 training and implementation programs can aid in converting healthcare systems and processes to this new code set by the compliance date.
“The ICD-10 training program came to me while in school”, says Akron-based Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Kim Vinson, the driving force of LART Consulting Group. “All healthcare data from registration to discharge are boiled down to codes to submit to insurance companies for payment. Since ICD-10 has over 50,000 more codes than ICD-9, proper training is essential for timely reimbursement. Healthcare facilities should prepare to train their staff up to the compliance date and at least a year after implementation to ensure timely reimbursements".
According to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), “ICD-10 education should be a major focus between now and the compliance date to minimize coding errors after implementation to use findings from testing with business partners to identify opportunities to improve coding and documentation practices…Use of an encoder does not replace proper ICD-10 training.” This code set was developed to fit the needs of the 21st century healthcare system.
The training programs are tailored around each healthcare facility’s needs. Coders need more intense training than senior executives; however, all users of coded data need ICD-10 training. LART Consulting Group will be hosting free ICD-10 training for a limited time. For more information, visit http://freeicd10training.eventbrite.com?s=40163434.
