Arte Divine Selects Guam to Receive Michelangelo’s Saint Peter’s Pietà Sculpture. World Surfing Champion Felipe Pomar arrives in Guam from Manila to help place a rare Vatican approved marble casting of Michelangelo's Pietà in The Archdiocese of Agaña, Guam.
Mr. Pomar has dedicated himself to making a difference in the world by lifting people’s spirits and health in the joyous celebration of life. When the Arte Divine Global Pietà Placement Committee began its Country selection process Mr. Pomar, a representative of Arte Divine, voiced his passion to place Michelangelo’s most famous work of art, the Pietà, in locations that he has called home; Guam, Peru and Hawaii to help lift the Spirits and Faith of people who have touched his heart.
In the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, “Art has a unique capacity to nourish the intuition of those who look …In this sense it has been said with profound insight that beauty will save the world. Beauty is a key to the mystery and a call to transcendence that stirs our soul’s yearning to connect with God.”
The Pietá is the only sculpture that Michelangelo ever signed. He considered it to be the consummate expression of both his personal talent and the Divine will that he believed to be the guiding hand behind his work. Michelangelo created the Pietà between 1498 and 1500 before reaching his twenty-fifth birthday. The Pietà is widely viewed as the greatest work of sculpture ever created and marks a watershed event in the Italian High Renaissance. Mary’s face appears peaceful, beautiful, and serene; highly polished to absolute anatomical perfection, these together with Mary’s expressive left hand turned upward in surrender to divine will, the artist achieved his greatest sculptural triumph and has inspired all who have seen it for over 500 years.
The Pietàs are cast using a proprietary Carrara marble and resin blend and then hand-finished and polished by master artisans, ensuring that every intricate detail of the masterpiece is exactly consistent with the original.
Arte Divine, along with the Vatican’s Observatory Foundation (VOF), authorized the creation of only 112 of these posthumous St. Peters Pietà marble castings for placement throughout the world. While some have been acquired by private art collectors, most of these exquisite castings have been acquired by generous private or corporate benefactors and then donated to Catholic cathedrals, churches, hospitals, and academic settings or institutions as legacy gifts.
A gifted Pietà can have very real and significant long term benefits to the donated Church, as placement of the sculpture often drives a sharp increase in the attendance of Parish worshipers, new pilgrims and other visitors following a Pietà’s installation.
David Newren, Arte’Divine’s founder and president states: “Our Global Placement Team strongly supports Felipe Pomar and his passion to place a Pietà on the island of Guam for the benefit of residents and visitors from various Pacific locations.
It is the Mission of Arte’ Divine and The Vatican Observatory Foundation to bring this monumental masterwork to 112 permanent locations, Catholic Cathedrals, Churches, Hospitals and Academic settings, around the world and thereby touch the souls of millions of the faithful, that will never have the opportunity to travel to the Basilica of St Peter, Vatican City, Rome, to stand before the world’s most divinely inspired masterwork that is Michelangelo's Pietà.”
During the fifteen days that Mr. Pomar will be on Guam he will be reaching out to meet with Church officials to receive a “Letter of Donation Request” for placement in a specific Cathedral, Church, Hospital or Academic setting.
Upon site and Donor selection completion Mr. Pomar will be inviting Mr. Richard Stewart Founder of the Catholic Loyalty Foundation, Mr. David Newren, Arte Divine’s Founder and President and under the Patronage of the Order of San Martino and Knights, honoree Prince Lorenzo Maria Raimondo de Medici from Rome who will all come together to celebrate this event on the island of Guam with generous private or corporate benefactors and local dignitaries.
