Dr. Zina Aaron of Rose Dental is now a certified SMART dentist. The Atlanta, Georgia based holistic dentist recently completed her certification and is now seeing patients for safe mercury extraction.
“We are pleased to now be able to offer our patient this safer procedure,” says Dr. Aaron. “Mercury is a toxic metal and vapor, and it is simply not something that we feel our patients want used on them. We are happy to now be certified in providing completely holistic methods of dental care.”
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology or IAOMT, promotes dentistry that is free from mercury. The organization states that they are concerned about patient exposure to mercury when amalgam fillings need to be removed.
“The process of drilling out those fillings can cause mercury particles and vapors to be inhaled by the patient,” says Dr. Aaron. “This is not safe for patients, dentists or dental workers that may be in the treatment room.”
Dr. Aaron states that it can be particularly harmful for pregnant women to inhale these particles as they can have a dangerous effect on fetuses. This coursework includes scientific readings and online videos that must be studied before testing is provided. Dentists must pass testing in order to receive their certification to ensure that they have read and that they fully comprehend the materials.
Education for certification includes learning about the application of a number of safety regulations that must be met in order to safely remove these fillings, including the use of specific equipment that is designed to assist with removing mercury fillings safely. Dentists who have received their certification are then recognized on the directory from the IAOMT to show patients that they can now perform these techniques safely.
In order for a dentist to begin the certification process, he or she must be a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and then enroll in the certification course. Dr. Aaron states that this is a certification that is well worth the effort.
