British American Auto Shop Launches Ambitious Solar Project In Columbia, MD

Following an initial solar, daylighting project that has saved the company nearly $40,000 in energy costs, British American Auto Care of Columbia, MD has launched a major solar conversion project that will be completed by the end of August. This project consists of installing 185 solar panels on the workshop and will be undertaken by Solar Solution, LLC of Washington, DC. Upon completion, the project is expected to cover around 95% of the auto shop's electricity needs.

Brian England, president of British American Auto Care explained, "This project, like the light tube project, makes business sense and will pay for itself in less than 10 years at current electrical costs."

The new project is aimed at eventually making the workshop energy independent of the national grid. Each of the 185 solar panels will operate individually and the energy generated by them will be monitored by a computer system that tracks the amount of energy the workshop uses. The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the Maryland Tour of Solar and Green Homes, a campaign run by volunteers to educate and display the benefits of renewable solar energy. Led by Brian, the Auto Care facility has been repeatedly voted as the best auto repair shop in Howard County. As the owner of the auto shop, Brian has initiated several environment friendly projects. The first energy conservation project launched by the company was in 2010 to provide natural daylighting for the facility via solar light tubes as well as automated lighting sensors and controls. Brian provided his overview of the project, "The solar light tube project has proven to be a huge success." He adds, "It had already paid for itself in about three to four years after installation."
