Valencia, California -- Nursing students are often given a welcome package once they begin the nursing program. These welcome packages usually include patches that identify them as nursing students from their particular school, resource kits, and often an entrée point stethoscope. Nursing students complain that they can’t afford to purchase professional quality stethoscopes and the ones issued usually serve better as Halloween costume accessories than a tool of the trade.
“I don't have the money out of pocket to buy a stethoscope outright and would love a real stethoscope. The trial ones that were given in our nursing kits are horrible and I can't hear anything with them,” stated nursing student Alan Anderson. “I thought I was set, I wasn’t expecting this.”
Currently nursing students across the country are gearing up to start their new school year. Most students are holding down jobs while they go to school. Other students rely on family to help them with the cost of being a student.
