Human trafficking is one of the most serious crimes plaguing the nation, and Florida is ranked third in the US for reported cases and calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Both males and females are targeted by this crime, and United for Human Rights aims to increase awareness and provide an environment in which those who are interested in doing something about it can talk about the issue and the community initiatives currently in place to try and handle the matter.

United for Human Rights is an international non-profit organization dedicated to implementing the universal declaration of human rights at local, regional, national and international levels. Its membership is made up of individuals, educators and groups all over the world who have a vested interest in forwarding the knowledge and protection of human rights across the world for all of mankind. The purpose of the organization is to provide human rights educational resources and activities that inform, assist and unite individuals, educators, organizations and governmental bodies in the pursuit of equal human rights for all across the globe.

The organization was founded on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the face of continued abuses of human rights across the world. “Surveys have found that most people have only a limited understanding of human rights,” says United for Human Rights’ site. “The Declaration contains the 30 rights that together form the basis of a civilization wherein all people can enjoy the freedoms to which they are entitled, and nations can coexist in peace.”

There are many ways in which individuals can get involved in the fight for human rights. The first action that people can undertake is petitioning their governments. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an international agreement defining the inalienable rights of every living human, and so it is necessary for the rights within the document to be known all over the world. It is up to the people to stand for their rights, however. As United for Human Rights says, “Make your voice heard. Make human rights education in schools and universities part of the curriculum. You can ensure human rights are learned and demanded by everyone by signing this petition.” An example of a group helping the cause is how United for Human Rights is raising donations for the Gentlemen's Course, Inc.

People can also start their own small groups to forward the cause of human rights. This allows them to take an active role in initiating activities that forward the cause of human rights in their communities and even in professional areas. An individual can do a lot, but a group can accomplish much more for the cause. There is a great deal of information on how to start a group on the United for Human Rights website. Groups can immediately begin holding petition drives and sending letters to legislators asking for them to enact human rights legislation as well as prevent the passing of legislation that directly endangers human rights.

“The idea of having rights because you are a human being was something that I never considered before coming to this place,” says a Facebook comment on the group’s page. “I have done many things and been to many places in my life and, when I spend time in this place, I gain a sense of my own functions that I can only gain from focusing on the thoughts of having these rights.” The comment adds, “I’m ok being called weird if it [this is what it takes ]to be free and have rights. Thank you to all who make this place available to me.”
