US based Senior Care Center1 is taking steps to share their insight on the senior population with communities across the country. As part of this new initiative, the organization is encouraging families to use every available resource in order to determine what their elderly loved ones need as well as which facilities would best support such requirements. One of these resources can be found on the company’s own website: a study that offers several important statistics on the senior population. Find this study here: https://srcarecenter.com/data/senior-statistics/.

The team at Senior Care Center1 considers it their mission to help families find great homes for their aging members, and they regularly go out of their way to uncover more information about the country’s senior population in order to help their community make more informed decisions in this regard. While the company already enjoys access to a broad network of nursing homes, memory care homes, senior apartments, memory care homes and more, they also take it upon themselves to conduct studies that help expand the knowledge they can then share with their community. In this particular instance, the organization adds that this study does not take the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic into account. As such, it may be expected that many of the issues it investigated have been affected in one way or another, often for the worse.

The study notes that, “According to the US Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Survey, Florida has the highest rate of residential seniors; about 19.9% of the population is 65 years and older. Maine comes in second with seniors making up 19.3% of the population.” It also estimates that around 1 in every 6 seniors still worked at the time of the study’s publication (around a year ago), which amounted to about 9.1 million people. This high proportion of elderly working Americans also tends to have to grapple with age discrimination, disability and chronic health conditions, to name a few.

Compounding the issue is that such problems only tend to worsen as each individual ages. Senior disability, the organization points out, “is a common reason why many seniors are unable to continue working. In states such as Oklahoma, about 43% of the senior population suffers from one or more disabilities pertaining to cognition, hearing, eyesight, walking, self-maintenance and completing errands.” Furthermore, heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease represented the leading causes of death for seniors 65 and older. This is one (of many) reasons that Senior Care Center1 urges their community to use the organization’s website, a prominent and free online resource, to locate care options and facilities that properly cater to their elderly loved one’s needs.

As many are now aware, seniors have been one of the most hard-hit populations in the US. Due to their underlying conditions and other risk factors, a senior who becomes infected with COVID-19 is much more likely to need emergency care. However, Senior Care Center1 acknowledges that the pandemic does not mean life can stand still and that seniors can hold off from getting the care they need. Many will still need to be transferred to dedicated facilities in order to be comfortable.

In response, the organization states that this practically means families must add another layer of caution when looking for a suitable home for their elderly loved ones — such as an action plan that minimizes the resident’s risk of contracting the virus and careful, strict adherence to safety protocols. These precautions will also need to take the senior resident’s needs into account.

As the study notes, for instance, “Engagement in social and community activities play a major role in whether seniors feel loneliness. Those who were engaged with volunteer work in the community or attended religious services reported feeling less lonely. Factors such as having strong ties to a social network, weekly contact with friends and family, sleeping more and good health all played a large role in decreasing feelings of loneliness.” While social distancing has made this much more difficult, certain providers have undertaken a litany of creative measures that are designed to accommodate their residents as best as possible until the crisis has concluded.

Fortunately for families across the US, none of this research has to be done alone. All are welcome to get started looking for a good home for their loved ones by visiting the Senior Care Center1 website, which offers a great deal of information on numerous facilities and their capabilities. Following this, they may also contact Casey Ryeback of Senior Care Center1 to discuss their needs and concerns in greater detail.
