Fort Lauderdale, FL - The start of April marks the beginning of Alcohol Awareness Month and The Source Addiction Treatment Center in Fort Lauderdale has published an article highlighting some concerning statistics on the rise of alcohol abuse in America. The addiction experts at The Source continuously work to raise awareness of the disease of addiction and provide helpful information and important resources to help people better understand the emotional and physical pain that alcoholism can cause.
Recent statistics about alcohol addiction are staggering. As recently as 2019, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health produced a study that covered a variety of topics around the increase in alcohol abuse. This study produced a number of alarming findings including the fact that adolescents as young as 12 years old are being diagnosed with alcohol use disorder. The study also uncovered the fact that many people don’t feel comfortable going to an addiction treatment center and instead try unsuccessfully try to manage addiction on their own.
Alcohol Awareness Month takes place every April and was founded in 1987 with the goal of raising awareness and reducing the stigma associated with alcohol addiction. Alcohol Awareness Month is sponsored by the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence which was founded in 1944 by Marty Mann. Mann, herself, was an alcoholic and therefore had a unique understanding of the struggles that those facing the disease often feel.
The Alcohol Awareness Month campaign is a way to promote better understanding of the disease of alcoholism and what people can do to overcome it. Additionally, Alcohol Awareness Month was created as a way to help remove the stigma of alcohol addiction. For many people, alcoholism is a source of shame something that often inhibits the decision to receive much-needed treatment.
During the month of April, everyone is encouraged to take the time to learn more about the disease of alcoholism and the negative impact that it can have on not only the person that struggles with it but also on friends and family members. Unfortunately, there are many people that still don’t understand that alcoholism is a disease. Instead, they mistakenly believe that addiction is a choice or a moral failing. While it’s true that a person’s first drink may have been a choice, as the disease progresses and ultimately takes over, an alcoholic is no longer in control of their drinking. This is why the very first step in the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable”.
