SUN Delaware ‘Goes Purple’ in October to Reduce Substance Misuse

Georgetown, Del. — This October, the whole state of Delaware is “going purple” to raise awareness of drug addiction. Treatment center SUN Behavioral Delaware is actively involved in the initiative.

Delaware Goes Purple is a campaign to target and reduce substance misuse in the First State. “Delaware Goes Purple empowers the community to stand up to erase the stigma and to support individuals who need it the most,” said a SUN Behavioral spokesperson.

The campaign is asking people of all ages and from all walks of life to sign a pledge to support addiction recovery and treatment in Delaware.

SUN Behavioral Delaware was at the Indian River High School football game vs. Seaford on Oct. 1 to pass out Go Purple wrist bands, as well as giving out information about Go Purple and SUN Behavioral.

SUN also lit their facility with purple lights and displayed the Go Purple banner on the building.

The Go Purple campaign reports that nationally, overdoses increased by 29% in 2020 during the heart of the pandemic. The death toll due to overdoses exceeded 93,000 nationwide and Delaware reported 447 overdose deaths – up from 431 in 2019.

“This will be our fourth year turning Delaware purple,” said Peggy Geisler, executive director of Sussex County Health Coalition, one of the creators of the Delaware Goes Purple campaign. “We are asking you to join us as we raise awareness, promote prevention, and deliver a message of hope.”

SUN Behavioral Delaware is a mental health and substance use disorder treatment facility that helps people of all ages – from children to seniors – with a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs.
