Golden, CO-based Roper Roofing & Solar recently published a blog post titled ‘Can You Add Protective Coating On Asphalt Shingle Roofs?’ The article talks about whether or not a protective coating on asphalt shingle roofs is possible and what the benefits and drawbacks of implementing this might be. The company offers a variety of roofing-related services, so they are uniquely qualified to comment on the viability of such coatings on asphalt.

“It's a novel concept, but nobody has given the idea any merit,” says the blog article. “Truthfully, protective coating on asphalt shingle roofs seems useful because of spray polyurethane foam or acrylic elastomeric's impermeable, seamless layer. Unfortunately, the protective coating only works for roofing materials with a non-granular property. For example, SPF and acrylic elastomeric coating exceptionally work with metal roofs because it has a continuous seam. Therefore, the acrylic coating isn't the roof's structural framework, but the metal panels themselves. On the other hand, the granular asphalt shingle will use the acrylic layer as its bonding and structural framework. However, asphalt shingles can erode, taking a small protective coating layer with it when it happens.”

Roofing manufacturers have not built an effective protective layer for asphalt shingle roofs, but asphalt is so durable that it is generally unnecessary. Most good roofs last 20-30 years, depending on the materials used and what sort of weather the roof is made to contend with. Asphalt shingles are particularly durable, and all but guaranteed at least two or three decades of use.

The article names and describes several different kinds of asphalt shingles, all of which have their own benefits and drawbacks. Organic asphalt shingles, for example, are waterproof and environmentally friendly since they are created using materials like wood fiber, cellulose, and waste paper. They are saturated with asphalt and an adhesive coating of ceramic granules and salt. These shingles are more vulnerable to fire, however, due to them containing more granules and oil-based content. This makes them less suitable for extremely hot weather.

Another type of asphalt shingle described in the blog post is fiberglass asphalt shingles. Fiberglass is gradually becoming more popular than organic thanks to its ability to resist fire. An inorganic material like glass fibers is used to build fiberglass shingles, which require a very thin layer of asphalt to make the roof waterproof. They are also excellent at defending against ultraviolet rays.

The blog post also talks about asphalt shingle quality, stating, “Shingles have various qualities and tend to last long in constant conditions. For instance, it works well in hot weather areas which doesn’t get much affected by other weather conditions such as winter and vice versa if implemented in snowy areas. Asphalt shingles are manufactured to provide adequate roof protection and to survive fire damage, rain, wind, and hail.”
