EUGENE, Ore. – Serenity Lane, an addiction treatment center located in Eugene, Ore., recently published an article outlining not just the positive side effects of cocaine use but the negative ones as well. The article was released to educate Pacific Northwesterners on the side effects of cocaine use that can include serious heart problems, sexual dysfunction, and hallucinations.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, cocaine is a commonly used drug in the United States. In 2018, 2 million people ages 18 to 25 and 3.5 million people age 26 or older reported using cocaine. The article notes that in 2015-’16, 7.96% of Oregon residents ages 18 to 25 reported having used cocaine within the past year.
In the short-term, cocaine use is tied to many side effects. According to a spokesperson at Serenity Lane, “Cocaine use is associated with the following physiological and psychological side effects: increased alertness, hyperactivity, restlessness, talkativeness, euphoria or feelings of intense happiness, increased blood pressure, insomnia or difficulty related to sleeping, loss of appetite, irregular heartbeat, paranoia, and/or auditory hallucinations.”
Beyond the side effects in the short term are the long-term implications of cocaine use – the most dangerous of which is dependency and addiction. Cocaine addiction leads to the eventual battle with withdrawal symptoms. According to Serenity Lane, withdrawal symptoms can include excessive sleepiness, increased appetite, a negative mood state, and depressive symptoms.
