Downpour Defender has launched its first product, which is also called the Downpour Defender. Created by a grandmother, the product is a raincoat or poncho for those in wheelchairs and on mobility scooters.
Vivian Hooton, founder of the company and creator of the Downpour Defender, states, "I wanted to provide a product that is helpful for wheelchair users as well as athletes or just anyone. This is a new creation and there is nothing like it on the market today."
Hooton says she got the idea after being confined to a wheelchair herself and dreading doctor's appointments on rainy days. She explains, "Nobody wants to be drenched when they're heading to the doctor, and sometimes it's really difficult for disabled people to find a raincoat that will provide the right coverage."
Hooton says that the Downpour Defender is specifically designed to not get tangled in wheelchair wheels and mechanisms, making it a safer choice for those with mobility problems. The rain poncho is made from heavy PVC for added protection, and has a hood that is flexible enough to support ponytails and hats while still protecting users from rain.
The seat of the raincoat is shorter than the front, making it much easier for those in wheelchairs to sit comfortably while wearing it. Hooton states that it can simply be slipped on without the wearer being bothered to get up and put it on as they do a traditional raincoat.
Hooton points out that the raincoat is comfortable and flexible enough for anyone to wear, but that it was designed specifically with the needs of the wheelchair and mobility scooter bound consumers in mind. She states that the product is also designed to be affordable for those with fixed incomes. Her experience in searching for a suitable raincoat after the accident that left her immobile and the costs associated with some of those products led her to create a rain poncho that both protects the wearer from the rain and helps to ease the burden of purchase.
