December 09, 2015 - PRESSADVANTAGE -
When companies began to create vehicles that do not require human drivers, the world welcomed the concept. While the pros far outweigh the cons, car accident attorneys are expecting collisions resulting from driver error to decrease dramatically, potentially resulting in a potential massive decrease in revenue. Attorney Timothy J. Ryan weighs in.
Widespread use of driverless cars is set to have an incredible impact on the world, according to Ryan. In addition to creating more free time, improving safety, reducing emissions, and easing road congestion, driverless cars, are seen as being able to provide transportation to countless people who need it, that would otherwise beare forced to go without.
While the anticipated benefits of these vehicles will positively affect countless people, there is a large group of individuals that are believed to be will be negatively impacted: car accident attorneys (personal injury lawyers). Most personal injury lawyers rely on car accidents for the majority of their income, says Ryan. Auto collisions are one of the nation’s top 10 leading causes of death and injury, with an estimated annual price tag of $871 billion annual price tag for the social harm and economic loss that results from car accidents in the United States.
Ryan comments that while some attorneys may view driverless cars as a threat, others believe that these new inventions to are be proof that personal injury law, and car accident lawyers specifically, have helped push legislators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and big business to create a safer way.
Ryan, a personal injury lawyer who has helped victims recover over $1 billion from injuries, sees the driverless cars movement as a culmination of efforts made by victims’ families and attorneys making to make a positive impact. Ryan said, “I’ve been assisting victims for more than 30 years. During that time, I’ve personally worked with thousands of families that have been torn apart by car accidents and the ensuing aftermath. Driverless cars aim to put a stop to the long history of injury and death associated with automobiles.”
“I became a personal injury lawyer because I believe in my responsibility to help others. When a vehicle manufacturer is sued for millions because their vehicle is determined to have defects that directly result in someone’s injuries or death, I consider that a huge win for victim’s rights. Those wins have helped push manufacturers to create safer vehicles,” he added.
“If driverless cars decrease car accidents by 99%, the amount I make would be hugely affected, but that’s not why I am an attorney. I’m an attorney because I want to do my part to make the world a better place. I see driverless cars as proof that our efforts have helped promote long-lasting change,” Ryan said.
While driverless cars aim to decrease the number of accidents, injuries, and deaths on the road, their effectiveness is still being evaluated. Driverless cars for public use are not expected to be available for several years.
