Laguna Hills, California - March 13, 2024 - PRESSADVANTAGE -
Laguna Hills, CA — La Paz Optometric Center has announced that it is adding two key instruments to its practices to help treat the growing number of patients who are seeking treatment for chronic dry eye syndrome. One is a radiofrequency device called Forma-I, and the other is an intense pulse light (IPL) instrument called the Lumecca-I.
“The whole team is very excited about our new dry eye instruments,” said Dr. Aaron Sako “In terms of what we know about dry eye and what is available on the market, this equipment is state-of-the-art. Until recent years, the best dry eye treatments that eye doctors had at their disposal only offered surface-level relief for patients. Now research has given us incredible insight into what causes dry eye, and emerging tech has finally caught up with that research. Lumecca-I and Forma-I address the root causes of dry eye and help ensure patients can experience lasting comfort.”
About 85% of dry eye cases are evaporative, meaning the tear film that lubricates and protects the eye dries out too quickly, leaving the eyes’ surface without enough moisture. This more common form of dry eye disease is due to blockages in the meibomian glands, and those glands are responsible for adding necessary oils to the tear film to keep a patient’s tears from evaporating too quickly. This causes symptoms like scratchy eyes, blurred vision, inflammation, and irritation. And the inflammation creates a negative feedback loop which creates or exacerbates other symptoms.
“Blockages in the meibomian glands can be caused by many different factors,” said Dr. Sako, “including environmental pollutants, job conditions, eye makeup, hobbies, screen use, and even our genetics. As a result, different strategies are necessary to remove those blockages in the meibomian glands to restore the tear film and return comfortable vision to the patient.”
Both Forma-I and Lumecca-I are safe, non-invasive treatments that feel pleasant and require no downtime, and both can treat issues under the skin’s surface. Lumecca-I IPL uses controlled light to target blood vessels in the facial tissue, which helps reduce inflammation. Forma-I, on the other hand, targets the meibomian glands themselves with radiofrequency waves to melt or dislodge blockages in the meibomian glands and reduce inflammation. Individually, they are both effective at treating most dry eye patients — especially the toughest cases — but when used together, they are many more times as effective.
“We have always prided ourselves on the in-depth treatment plans we develop,” said Dr. Sako, “because they are tailored to the patient and take their individual circumstances into account. This individualized approach has kept our treatment success rate very high. Now, with these two new additions, we should have no trouble being able to treat nearly every dry eye case that walks through our doors.”
