At the end of the season, the overall champion is decided on the basis of the points accumulated in each of the ten events. Five new destinations have been added to this season and many HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, consisting of ten tournaments, were held at different locations around the world."

The first Sevens World Series was held in the 1999-2000 season. The goal was to make rugby a world class sport, enabling elite level teams from around the globe to compete against each other. HSBC, the banking group, started sponsoring the event from 2010 onward, which is when their name was added to the event. Since the 2012-2013 season, countries have been relegated and promoted. This means that one countries leaves the series each season, and a new country joins. Russia was promoted in the last season, whereas Japan was relegated.

One of the dominating countries in the series has been New Zealand, who have been able to win six continuous titles, winning a total of 11 out of 14 titles. Whether or not they will do as well again this year remains to be seen, as countries such as South Africa, Fiji and Samoa are also contestants this year. For the 2015-2016 season, the 10 tournaments will be held in 10 countries, namely, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, England. The IRB Sevens site is keeping track of all team developments and this is proving to be the most popular part of their website so far, particularly since many people use the information to place team bets as well.
