Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACSGW), based in Takoma Park, MD, are proud to announce that they have taken the opportunity to use the Martin Luther King Holiday to train the next generation of care givers. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s declaration of true education was the principle the ACSGW used to inject fresh volunteer blood into its volunteer community. This allowed them to partner with two youth groups to further their skills of caring for the community.
Ken Flemmer, center director of ACSGW, says: "Intelligence plus character is the true goal of education."
Volunteers from the Takoma Park 4-H Club helped in processing more than 3,000 ACSGW newsletters for mailing. They were assisted by another group of youth volunteers from the Silver Seventh day Adventist Pathfinder club. Regular volunteers also joined in preparing and distributing the organization's quarterly newsletter. ACSGW is developing additional opportunities to allow these and other youth groups to enhance their capability for showing compassion. In addition, center director Ken Flemmer gave both groups a tour of the facilities and provided a presentation on the services that they offer.
The Martin Luther King holiday also provided ACSGW with the opportunity to deepen its support for Winter Haven, a local hypothermia center. This is a nonprofit center that is unique in its mission of providing shelter to homeless people during winter. Meanwhile, the ACSGW food bank shared several hundred pounds of food items to Winter Haven. ACSGW have also donated several workstations to support those who depend on the services of Winter Haven. As the winter and economic climate place stress especially on those who are in need, the ACSGW will continue to develop ways to contribute to the advancement of society and provide for ways for the community members to improve on their lives.
Martin Luther King Day is a holiday that celebrates the life and legacy of the popular civil rights figure. His work made great strides towards ending segregation and racial inequality. His greatest legacy for many, however, is the idea that people should care for each other, and it is this that ACSGW wants to focus on more than anything.
