East Sussex, United Kingdom - WIAT.com is a popular news aggregate site in Alabama that features news stories, sports and weather. Recently they displayed a news report about the vulnerability of women with cardiovascular problems to heart attacks. This brings into contrast the need for those with hypertension to continuously monitor their blood pressure to remain healthy.
The report on WIAT.com stated that according to the American Heart Association’s journal named Circulation, “a woman’s heart attack may have different causes and symptoms than a man’s heart attack.” The study from the journal would further state that “the risk factors are higher in black and Hispanic women.”
The report on WIAT.com also suggested through a quote from Laxmi Mehta, a non invasive cardiologist and Director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Health Program at the Ohio State University that heart disease in women remained underdiagnosed and undertreated. The doctor mentioned, “Despite stunning improvements in cardiovascular deaths over the last decade, women still fare worse than men and heart disease in women remains underdiagnosed, and undertreated, especially among African-American women.”
According to WIAT.com, heart attacks are caused by blockages in arteries for both men and women. It was seen that women had less severe blockages but blood vessels pumping to the heart can be damaged. When blood flow through these decrease it can lead to a heart attack.
According to the news report, “women face more complications from attempts to restore blood flow, because their blood vessels tend to be smaller, and tend to be under-treated medically.”
Additionally it was noted that risk factors for heart attack differed in degree of risk for women compared to men. The article would state “high blood pressure is more strongly associated with heart attacks in women and if a young woman has diabetes her risk for heart disease is 4 to 5 times higher compared to young men.”
A representative from the Amazon vendor Just-Brill commented, “this news report from WIAT.com highlighted how careful women have to be when diagnosed with hypertension. Our blood pressure monitor is designed to give accurate readings for patients to monitor their illness. It is also easy to use and possesses a large LCD display screen.”
