Dr. Claire Serrato is the first ObGyn in California to earn the Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (SOERS) designation from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of surgical care worldwide. The SOERS program recognizes surgeons who demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care.

The SOERS objective requirements and evaluation processes were developed in collaboration with leading robotic surgeons. The surgeon must provide all data as the primary surgeon on at least 125 patients' robotic procedures and outcomes, with 100% reporting from the preceding 12 months from all hospitals where the surgeon operates. In addition, the surgeon must provide extensive information from a random subset of those patients regarding the consent, indications, operative notes, and postoperative course outcomes.

Requirements also include documentation of unrestricted privileges, board certification, training in robotics, continuing medical education in robotics in the preceding 12 months, as well as membership in a national or international medical society focusing on robotic surgery and documentation with dedication to surgical excellence in robotics. Such surgeons must show videotapes of procedure equipment and facility equipment, current licenses of office staff caring for patients, records of surgical staff training, and they must demonstrate a consistent, clear method for patient education, preoperative & postoperative instructions, and legal consents.

"Robotic Surgery" is somewhat of a misnomer. All instrument movement is controlled by the surgeon. The conventional laparoscopic surgeon stands over the patient and uses hand-held, long-shafted instruments which have no 'wrists' and looks up and away at a 2D monitor. The da Vinci System used in Dr. Serrato's procedures requires the physician to sit at a console with eyes and hands positioned in line with the instruments. This system features a 3D view and miniaturized, wristed instruments for more delicate movement.
