In the recently released article, What the Measles Outbreak Means for Cancer Patients, Dr. Samadi details the devastating risks of measles for those with cancer. The popularity of not vaccinating children has been growing in recent years. Despite parents knowing the risks of not vaccinating their children, the threats don’t seem to sway parents’ decisions. That was until recently when measles started to spread among children across the United States.

The article states that last year, an estimated 100,000 young children were not vaccinated against 14 diseases. From January 1 to March 28, 2019, 387 people have been diagnosed with measles. This disease “was declared eliminated…from the United States in 2000” resulting from an effective vaccination program. With more parents deciding to not vaccinate their children every day, measles will continue to thrive by spreading from one person to another.

This is becoming a larger concern for people who are suffering from medical conditions, such as cancer. Cancer patients have a compromised immune system. As the body tries to combat cancerous cells, it doesn’t have as much strength to fight off other viruses and bacteria, which is why the measles outbreak is so distressing. When cancer patients encounter someone suffering from measles, they need to receive immunoglobulin (IVIG). This treats autoimmune, infectious and idiopathic diseases. It increases the likelihood they will not develop measles or suffer from related complications.

Dr. Samadi suggests that cancer patients become vigilant to protect themselves from preventable diseases. The article advises cancer patients to keep their distance from people they do not know well. While out in public, it’s important to use hand sanitizer, wash one’s hands often, and stay as far away from others as possible.

Medical professionals continue to educate parents on the necessity of vaccinating their children. Throughout the outbreaks, Dr. Samadi is hopeful that autism research releases more evidence against vaccinations causing autism, so anti-vax parents can put an end to the preventable diseases many are now dealing with in the United States.
