Milton, Fla – The automotive recycling industry has begun making the efficient recycling of plastics from vehicles a top priority. With auto manufacturers focusing more research on zero waste efforts, the recycling of plastics would bring about many benefits to the recycling industry. A local salvage yard in Milton, Butler’s Auto Recycling, has shared new information about the progression towards recycling these plastics.
Each year, over 12 million vehicles are sent to scrap yards where they are to be salvaged for parts. In previous years, the main focus of recyclers has been the recycling of vehicle metals, as this yields the highest payout. However, researchers have begun looking more into the recycling of plastic materials in order to reduce the amount of these materials finding their way into landfills. By weight, the automobile is currently the most recycled product, with almost 80% of the vehicle’s weight being used in some type of recycling process. Of the vehicle’s total weight, plastics make up only about 10%. However, half of the volume of materials used in manufacturing is plastics.
Because of the lightweight nature of plastic materials, they are continually being used more in the manufacturing of vehicles. Plastic parts are also easier and cheaper to ship. With the use of plastics only going to increase, organizations have begun research on making new parts from salvaged car bumpers. As the research progresses, the demand for recycled plastics is expected to rise, creating a chain reaction to engage auto recyclers to help in the plastics life cycle.
