According to a recent WFAA channel 8 news article, several migrant teens went missing from their temporary home at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas on Saturday, March 27. This temporary housing facility for unaccompanied minor migrant children was set up to hold almost 3000 children because of the unfolding humanitarian crisis at the U.S./Mexico border. Something that the convention center was never designed to do. The good news is that the Dallas Police found the teens hanging out at a nearby 7-Eleven store just a few short hours after they were reported missing.
According to the article, these comments about the incident were made by a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families, “Four unaccompanied migrant teens who were being housed at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center after crossing the U.S./Mexico border have been found after leaving the convention center without permission. The teens were found safe after being gone for a few hours.”
Initially, there was some confusion as to exactly how many children left the facility. It was first reported that the number of migrant teens that went missing was 5. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families then confirmed that the actual number of missing teens was 4. A fact that was first reported by Fox 4 News in a news bulletin from March 30.
The government spokesperson added, “On rare occasions, kids leave the shelters without permission. On each occasion, authorities are notified, the kids are found and returned, and, usually, transferred to another facility.” No specifics on how the children got out of the facility were given but officials noted that improvements to safety and security at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center had been made.
