Seattle Water Line Repair Company Urges Community to Conserve Water

Seattle, Wash. - Based on runoff conditions from the Colorado River into Lake Powell and Lake Mead, a new June study shows that both reservoirs are fast approaching "dead pool" status where stored water is so low that the dam generators cannot produce enough power. Water loss is accelerating rapidly, according to the Bureau of Reclamation. In addition, the Bureau warns that significant water restrictions would begin in 2022 for the three states in the Lower Basin of the Colorado River Compact: Nevada, California, and Arizona. Lake Mead, Nevada renders 90 percent of Southern Nevada's water supply. Since its opening in the 1930s, the nation's largest man-made body of water has hit its lowest level in more than 80 years. Water conservation becomes even more urgent as a federal declaration on water shortages is expected sometime this summer. With the lack of rain and heightened temperatures, utilizing the water conservation tools and practices already in place can help citizens in drought areas to drive down water usage immediately. There are already optional water restrictions in many communities on the west coast. Water utility companies have notified residents that they need to reduce water use now to prevent mandatory restrictions from occurring. Even so, if guidelines are not followed, the west coast may begin mandatory restraints as early as next month.

On July 14, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee issued a state-wide drought emergency for much of Washington state. The projected water supply for most Washington counties is 75 percent below average, and the governor declared this season, “a summer of climate change.” Suggestions to conserve water include: Turn off kitchen and bath faucets when doing other tasks, wash only full loads of laundry, run the dishwasher only when full, fix drips and leaks, reduce shower times, and put buckets in the shower to catch water for use on plants and yard.
