There are two types of surrogacy, each representing the genetic relationship between the surrogate and the child. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate’s egg is used to create the embryo that she is carrying. In other words, a traditional surrogate is the biological mother of the baby. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate carries a pregnancy that was created with another woman’s egg. A gestational surrogate shares no genetic material with the baby. Some states like Wyoming have no regulations and no legal precedents. Some states, like Michigan, impose a prison sentence and a hefty fine for commercial surrogacy. Surrogacy can cost anywhere from $120,000 to $200,000 with the surrogate mother receiving anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000, depending on the state.
