Naperville, IL — For over a century, children from the U.S. have been writing to Santa Claus at the North Pole. But what happens to these thousands and thousands of letters each year? The United States Postal Service stepped in over a hundred years ago to help the man in the jolly red suit by launching “Operation Santa,” and a Naperville shipping store is here to share all the details with their community.
Over a century ago, the postal service started getting letters to Santa from kids across the nation. Then, in 1912, a Postmaster named General Frank Hitchcock sanctioned his employees and customers to begin responding to the letters. Operation Santa was born with this kind of act, and the program has been helping less-fortunate children receive wished-for presents ever since.
In order for children and their families to participate in Operation Santa, all they must do is write a letter to Santa, add a First-Class Mail Forever stamp, add their full return address, and mail it to Santa Claus at 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888. The letters must be postmarked between November 1st and December 10th. Once the post office receives the letters, they are sorted, scanned, and then posted to the USPS Operation Santa website (personal info redacted) where generous individuals or businesses can then “adopt” them. Unfortunately, not all letters get “adopted,” so it is crucial that those who want to participate follow the instructions when sending their letters.
According to USPS Newsroom, “Potential adopters, once approved, can visit USPSOperationSanta.com, read through the posted letters, pick one or more that they’d like to fulfill, and follow the directions on how to grant that special wish for a child. For security reasons, all potential adopters must be vetted through a short registration and ID verification process before they can adopt any letter. If you’ve adopted letters in the past, you must still be verified each year.”
