Contractors State License Center (CSLC) is offering in-person and online classes for contractors license in Los Angeles.

CSLC trains students for the test administered by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), a difficult test that is required to qualify for a contractor license in the state of California. This is a critical part of any contractor’s career as the state’s law requires anyone who does any building work for a fee over $500 to be a licensed contractor.

The license requirement is applicable for all businesses or individuals who construct or alter any building, highway, road, parking facility, railroad, excavation, or other structure in Los Angeles. Contracting without a license is a misdemeanor and unlicensed contractors face potential sentences of up to one year in county jail and potential administrative fines from $200 to $15,000.

“There are also a few requirements before you can take the CSLB test,” says the spokesperson for CSLC. “You need at least four years of experience in your trade over the last ten years. While this requirement may ensure only experienced contractors are eligible for a license, passing the test is still a challenge as it involves studying topics in law and business, something that most unlicensed contractors may not have had to deal with on the job. CSLC fills in these gaps and makes you exam-ready so that nothing stops you from leveling up in your contracting career.”

CSLB’s license exam consists of two separate tests of multiple-choice questions. All qualifying individuals must pass the standard Law and Business examination which consists of 125 questions and requires at least 73% correct answers to pass. In addition, qualifying individuals must also pass a second test, covering the specific trade or certification area for which they are applying, which can have anywhere from 80 to 125 questions and has a passing percentage that varies based on the trade.

The spokesperson for CSLC talks about what makes the test so difficult by saying, “It is not a static test. Test questions change so frequently that we have a dedicated member of our staff, who is also a contractor, studying the test to update our materials and impart the right information to our students. Thankfully, through our classes and interactive practice tests, you will have all the preparation time and resources you need to clear CSLB’s license exam, on the first try, or your money back!”

CSLC’s classroom curriculum includes six courses that cover Law and Trade. Students have immense flexibility to dictate their own schedule as they are only required to come in once a week in a two-hour block. They can also retake a class if they happen to miss out or even if they just want to take it again.

After the completion of the six weeks of classes, students can hone their skills in the practice tests. CSLC’s digital practice tests are modeled after CSLB’s computer-assisted testing system, giving students plenty of experience to familiarize themselves with the interface and become comfortable with taking tests on a computer.

The California contractor school also offers a home study program where students can purchase its books, study guides, and practice exams to prepare on their own time. For contractors with an extremely busy schedule, the center also offers classes over Zoom that are just as engaging and informational as the in-person classes.

“Though our home study program is up to the mark and contains everything you need to successfully pass the exam,” says the spokesperson, “we urge you to sign up for our live in-person or Zoom classes. You can, of course, memorize everything at home but it is only during a live session that you get to strike up a conversation with the instructors and really learn the material. There are also no distractions during our in-person classes, allowing you to fully focus on understanding the coursework.”
