In an Instagram post uploaded on January 8, 2024, Mats Moy made a case for millennials planning on establishing their roots in the GTA to consider this winter season as the right time to go ahead with their plans. Mats acknowledges that interest rates are high but the nature of the property market in the winter season makes it more likely to get a good deal on a home that one is interested in.
Mats writes, “Yep, interest rates are high, but guess what? Winter means fewer buyers, and that’s your ticket to getting a steal of a deal on your new home. Sellers might just drop the price tag for a quick deal, and who doesn’t love a winter sale?”
Furthermore, Mats offers his perspective on the future of the real estate market in Toronto by predicting that rates are poised to go down further in the year. This gives homebuyers a chance to purchase a home now and refinance later at a lower rate. Mats does, however, urge homebuyers to analyze their current financial situation and determine whether they can afford to lock in a mortgage at the current rates.
Mats says in the post, “So, rates are doing their thing, but let’s remember—they fluctuate. While they might be high now, we’re anticipating rate decreases throughout the year. Get in the game early, secure your new home now, and be the envy of future buyers who waited too long. IF and ONLY IF you can afford to, lock in that purchase now and refinance the interest later at a lower rate. High rates today, potential magic tomorrow. You’ll thank me later.”
Next, Mats highlights that winter is a time when the Toronto and Brampton real estate market has cooled down which means that buyers face far less competition. With fewer buyers, the chances of being outbid on one’s dream home are significantly reduced. Searching for a home in winter also allows homebuyers to experience houses during that season, a luxury not afforded to those buying during the summer or fall. Finally, buying a new home in the winter might also mean lower associated moving costs and more availability at moving companies.
