Regulations and technical requirements can make aircraft logbooks complex. This can make it difficult for DOMs, technicians and aircraft owners to communicate about important decisions.
This is important because up to 30% of an aircraft's resale value can depend on the content and condition of the aircraft logbooks. This can amount to millions of dollars.
To make it easier, V-Log LLC has created a cartoon series in its Logbook Best Practices blog. Characters Orville (a Director of Maintenance) and Wilbur (a technician) discuss some of the more absurd situations that can occur when logbooks are neglected.
As an example, Wilbur spends hours and hours looking through paper logbooks because he "doesn't have time" to digitize the logbooks. They also discuss situations based on actual incidents, such as a flight crew leaving the logbooks in the trunk of rental car, or working with an aircraft that jumped the chocks, broke through a hangar wall and set off a fire supression system. The aircraft repair was minor, but the damage to the logbooks inside the hangar was irreparable; renedering the aircraft unflyable.
"Complex ideas can be communicated in a simple and entertaining way by using cartoons," said marketing consultant Paula Williams of ABCI. "In the case of V-Log, this was a good way to reach busy people, make them chuckle, but also raise awareness about important issues.
These cartoons are being used online, in brochures, books and live presentations by V-Log employees.
