Rally4Vets Completes 5,452-Mile Journey Across the US to Raise Awareness for Veteran Suicide Prevention

El Segundo, CA — Rally4Vets founder and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hess has completed his epic 21-day, 5,452.8-mile drive across the United States in his C6 Corvette to raise awareness for veteran suicide prevention.

This remarkable 21-day journey, aptly named "The Be The One Rally," saw Hess travel across the US from Los Angeles to the National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on US Highway 20, America’s Medal of Honor Highway, raising awareness of the tragedy of veteran suicide and honoring America’s Medal of Honor recipients.

The "Be The One" Rally for Veteran Suicide Prevention was more than just a drive; it was a mission. Starting on August 2nd, Hess set out to connect with veterans, supporters, and communities across the country, sharing stories and spreading the message of the importance of suicide prevention among veterans.

The important element of the American Legion "Be The One" campaign is that each one of us can be the person who engages with a veteran in distress and connects them to assistance. Hess distributed postcards with the simple questions from the Columbia Lighthouse Project Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Hess is a life member of American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach, California.

From the sunny coast of Newport Beach, California, to the scenic Pacific shores of Newport, Oregon, Hess navigated the less-traveled US Highway 20, that he believes should have the title of America's "Mother Road." This route took him through the Cascade Mountains, the vast prairies of Wyoming, and the rolling fields of Iowa, highlighting the diversity and beauty of America.

"Every mile, every post, every handshake and conversation was a reminder of the strength and resilience of our veteran community," said Hess. "Driving through the heart of America, from small towns to big cities, I was continually inspired by the stories of service and the outpouring of support for the Be The One campaign." The trip was Hess's personal contribution to the American Legion's Be The One campaign.

Throughout the journey, Hess made stops at 15 American Legion posts, where he was met with warm welcomes and shared stories with fellow veterans. From Bend, Oregon, to Cody, Wyoming, and Rapid City, South Dakota, the camaraderie and support were palpable.

In addition to the personal connections made at each stop, Hess participated in six television interviews in cities along the route, further amplifying the message of veteran suicide prevention to a broader audience.

Reflecting on the road traveled and the mission accomplished, Hess announced plans for another rally in 2025 and is actively seeking sponsors who are passionate about supporting America's veteran community. "This journey was just the beginning. We’re already gearing up for 2025, and we’re inviting brands and individuals who want to make a real difference to join us," said Hess.
