Hurricane Michael was one of the most devastating natural disasters of 2018, severely impacting every resident in Florida. Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Northwest Florida, a Panama City Fl plumbing company based out of Florida, has documented the impact the Hurricane had on their company and community as a whole.

When contacted about the document, Scott Hobbs, a representative for Mr. Rooter said, “Hurricane Michael was one of the worst periods of my life, and I’ve been through a lot in my time. The document, that was all my wife’s idea. The thing is, you hear about something like this, a natural disaster, in the news all the time. You hear about the people who suffer in it and have their whole lives changed. Businesses go – I don’t want to say ignored – but they’re sidelined. The thing is, businesses are made of people too. My wife wrote the document to highlight how an event beyond anyone’s control, like Hurricane Michael, can affect a company, especially one like us.”

Mr. Hobbs continued, “Ask any of our employees and they’ll say we run a tight-knit business here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Northwest Florida. Every one of them is part of our family, and whatever happens to them happens to us too. We are a locally owned and operated company. Between my wife, my kids, and myself, there is a blurring of the lines between family and business. We just want to provide a different perspective to a natural disaster like this.”

The employees of Mr Rooter Plumbing provided evidence to Scott’s claims. James Hindman, an employee of the company, said, “The hurricane was hell, true. Thankfully, my family and I got through it fine; didn’t get hurt or anything. The hurricane did a number on our house, though. I was lost, and didn’t know what to do, but Scott reached out and arranged a place for us to rest our heads. I’ve never been more thankful for the place where I work. I knew from the beginning I was working with good people, and that just proved it for me.”

All employees were supplied with a Hurricane Preparedness Plan, and after Hurricane Michael subsided, those who were displaced were also given a roof over their heads. Additionally, following the hurricane, the employees were paid to go to each other’s houses and help with salvage and cleanup efforts. Each employee’s needs were identified, and with the help of the Panama City Plumbing network around the country, each of their needs were met.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Logan Sherman, another employee of the company. “I thought my life was pretty much over, even though I got through the disaster just fine. I thought I’d be out of work for a while, that my house and what little I owned were all gone. But even in that darkest moment, the Hobbs came through for me. For all of us. They paid for us to help each other, they assessed our abilities, and they assigned us work. They gave our minds something to focus on as we rebuilt. What little we could salvage, they transferred to their warehouse in Niceville until we could get a place for ourselves again.”

Mr. Rooter Plumbing originally started in Oklahoma, and has spread around the United States, providing top-of-the-line plumbing services. Wherever they have a branch, their clients have had nothing negative to say. Linda Johnson, a client of the company in Florida, said, “Why would I say anything bad about them? My bathroom was a mess a while back, the plumbing got completely messed up. I called them, and they were at my house within 30 minutes. I was given a flat price for the work required. They did the job within an hour too. I paid them and then they left, no complications. But that is the company. I know their people and I’ve met the Hobbs family. After the whole Michael situation, I watched them as they reached out to the community and helped wherever they could. They were removing trees, and distributing food and water to people who needed it. Scott is a great man, and the company reflects that.”

For a final word, Scott noted that, “It’s like the Bible says in Galatians, 6:2, ‘Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.’ Helping others is a large part of what makes us human, and we are all human here. If anyone needs help, whether it’s with a broken tap or anything else, you can reach out to us.”
