Friday evening March 29, 2019, Sarah James will perform at The Cupping Room on West Broadway in Soho NYC along with Ed Cherry on Guitar and Donald Nicks on bass. The sets will start at 8 and end at 11 pm.
Ms. James is an eclectic singer who is also a multi-instrumentalist and composer. These days she is focusing on singing her original music and working on a book of her original compositions to be released in the Fall of 2019.
Her music is informed by the blues and she cites the great classic blues women as her inspiration. Think Ma Rainy and Bessie Smith, then think Ernestine Anderson and Lightning Hopkins. Then, think classic jazz singers, Helen Merrill, Anita O’Day, Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, Mark Murphy, and Nancy King.
Ms. James is a creative force who resides in the realm of sound, color, and image. Not well known, she keeps a low profile which is most likely due to her penchant for crossing mediums and staying under the radar. A poet and environmentalist, she is known for singing about love and singing about plastic in the same set.
She crosses musical and poetic boundaries with ease. As a composer/lyricist, she names her influences in a broader vein, from Broadway to Bernstein, to Joni Mitchell and the be-bop masters Jon Hendricks and Charlie Parker.
Guitarist Ed Cherry is a lyrical, soulful and deep in the tradition jazz guitarist. Known for his ability to swing hard and lay down a groove, his contribution to jazz for the past 40 years is considerable.
Ed Cherry played with Dizzy Gillespie for many years and carries with him the zest and enthusiasm for jazz Dizzy Gillespie personified. Listening to his choice of chords and rhythmic phrasing leaves a listener feeling that special “real jazz feel”.
Cherry has recorded with many, many artists including John Patton, Dr. Lonnie Smith and has released 3 recordings as a leader. A consummate jazz artist, he is keeping the jazz flame alive. His 40 years of jazz guitar playing can be heard in every note.
Donald Nicks bass has graced the band of Roy Ayers for 15 years. His funk feel and impeccable time and groove are noteworthy additions to the bands of Jorge Sylvester, Orlando Aviles, Luther Thomas, Nora McCarthy, Nancy Wilson, Henry Threadgill, Charles Earland, Ray Mantilla. He continues to record and perform all over New York and the U.S. and well as Europe.
His contribution to jazz is respected and admired on the New York scene and he continues to personify the heart of the groove in the US and abroad.
The music this evening will be a mix of blues, standards, and originals. The Cupping Room is known in New York circles a place for live music that has an excellent, tasty, food menu with an American and Mediterranean flair, a full bar and a very relaxed atmosphere.
The Cupping Room also boasts of a fine Sunday Brunch, great waitstaff, and a warm inviting vibe. This room is also a hot spot for travelers who stay in the nearby Soho area hotels.
