Sunday, April 14, 2019, Teri Roiger brings her Quartet to the hip Nyack jazz venue Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, in celebration of the music, lyrics, and legacy of Abbey Lincoln.
Ms. Roiger will be singing songs written by Ms. Lincoln, songs Ms. Lincoln made her own, and lyrics written by her to prominent jazz musicians’ compositions. Roiger will also be performing music from Ms. Lincoln’s 1960 seminal Civil Rights recording with then-husband Max Roach, “We Insist: Freedom Now Suite.”
Roiger’s 2012 release, DEAR ABBEY: The Music of Abbey Lincoln, produced by Brian Bacchus, made the Jazz Journalist Association’s “best of” vocal releases list for 2012, and was featured as one of the five best tribute releases chosen by the LaurenceDonohue-Greene, Editor of New York City Jazz Records in their January 2013 issue.
Abbey Lincoln was one of the most profound and original artists of all time; a master vocalist, prolific composer and lyricist, actor, poet, and activist. She left an indelible footprint on our culture through every decade and across all disciplines. Those who admired, worked with, and loved Abbey will be forever touched by her standard, her magic, her perspective, and her spirit.
Teri Roiger's vocal mastery shines when interpreting the music and lyrics of Abbey Lincoln. Roiger's style is warm, engaging and her interpretations of Abbey Lincolns music are unique and inviting.
Roiger will be joined on Sunday, April 14, by James Weidman on piano, John Menegon bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums.
James Weidman is one of the most versatile pianists in the world of music. He performed for many years with Abbey Lincoln and currently performs with Joe Lovano among others.
Originally from Ohio, Mr. Weidman has been associated with a who's who of jazz luminaries. Max Roach, Woody Herman, Archie Shepp, James Moody, Greg Osby, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, Jay Hoggard, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Gloria Lynne, Dakota Staton, MBase Collective, Cassandra Wilson, TK Blue (co-leader of Taja). Well known for his versatility, he is hailed as “unfailingly lyrical”,“convivially assertive” and “exquisite.” A longtime pianist in Ms. Roiger bands, Weidman’s style complements Roiger’s voice perfectly.
Bassist John Menegon’s tenure with legendary saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman and Dewey Redman has enriched his musicianship and given Menegon a musical perspective that informs every ensemble he works with. A composer, educator and producer Menegon's musical vocabulary reflects his distinctive approach to arranging and his uncanny ability to tap into all styles of music. His arrangements are featured on Ms. Roigers Dear Abbey CD.
Jason Tiemann rounds out the rhythm section. Originally from the Midwest, Tiemann cites the classic drummers of jazz as his inspiration. His recording and performing associations include an astonishing array of musicians including, but certainly not limited to, Benny Golson, David Liebman, Harold Mabern, Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Peter Bernstein, Slide Hampton and countless others on the New York scene. Jason is an endorsing artist for Yamaha drums, Evans drumheads, and Innovative Percussion sticks, mallets and brushes.
With the rich, combined experience of Weidman, Menegon and Tiemann’s collaborations, look for an evening of dynamic, inventive, spontaneous musicianship.
