The Stamford American International School Of Singapore, one of the leading international schools in the country, recently celebrated the accomplishments of their 2019 Graduating Class. The Stamford American International School is known for being a non-selective and inclusive school that provides their students the flexibility to tailor their graduation pathway to suit their interests. To celebrate this occasion, the school has shared the success of their students, bidding farewell as they embark on this new stage of their lives.
Their 2019 graduating class is their fourth cohort, and the largest of the school's history, consisting of 124 students. Aside from being the largest, it is also the most successful cohort so far. Each student graduated with a US High School Diploma, though they also had the opportunity to pursue an International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) Diploma—the only school in Singapore to offer this option. Of this year’s graduating class, 93 students participated in the IB program, a significant increase from 59 students in 2018.
The graduates have achieved fantastic IB results, with a pass rate of 90% on the IB exams and an average score of 31, surpassing the world average of 29.8. Another achievement worth noting is the fact that the graduates have also excelled in AP results, averaging an outstanding 3.58 points out of a potential 5 points, which is also above the world average of 3.19.
The cohort represented 38 nationalities, out of the 75 that make up the wider Stamford community. The school has also lived up to their reputation for being a truly international and diverse community, in which 13% of their students are being awarded an IB Bilingual Diploma this year. This is also indicative of the robust development of their overall language program.
In addition to these outstanding achievements, the school takes the utmost pride in the wide variety of opportunities that they provide their students. According to the school, also known as SAIS, allowing their pupils to make important decisions regarding their own future is the most effective way to encourage them to find both their passions and the subjects they excel in. These efforts have continued to bear fruit as, to date, 90% of the year’s students applying to universities were accepted to their first or second choice of university. An outstanding 77% of this category were accepted at their first choice university, demonstrating that Stamford students continue to attend top universities and colleges all around the world. These statistics also reflect the excellence of the tutoring methods and unique approaches used at SAIS.
Jordan, President of the National Honor Society, Captain of the U19 Varsity Cross Country Team, creator of The Stamford Journal, and full IB Diploma Programme student, praises the teachers for the support he received. “Having a supportive environment to develop it has been invaluable and has helped form the connections I have made today—and ones that I will carry on past high school. I felt support in everything I wanted to pursue,” says Jordan, who will be attending McGill University in Canada and doing a Double Major in Finance and Managing for Sustainability.
Owen, originally from South Korea, is also a full IBDP student who achieved 40 points in his IB exams and will be studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. Owen credits his teachers’ endless support and encouragement as a crucial factor behind him attaining his goals.
Class 2019 graduate Miki from Japan chose to do the IBDP, inspired by the guidance of the IB teachers at Stamford. She says, “As my preferred university course didn’t have specific subject requirements, I was able to be flexible in my subject choices, and so selected subjects I was passionate about. I am happy that I chose to study IB Visual Arts as it trained me to be philosophical and analytical, which I think are important life skills. Throughout the course, I compared various socio-cultural and socio-political artworks, which allowed me to be an open-minded thinker. I was also fortunate to be able to complete Language A and Language B subjects at Higher Level, which made me a more attractive, multi-lingual candidate to universities.”
