Pensacola, Fla.: There could be a change in Florida’s divorce law coming soon. The proposed bill would end permanent alimony along with creating a 50-50 split in child custody cases. Craig Vigodsky a local family law attorney in Pensacola is highlighting this controversial Florida bill.
A state representative from Pensacola, Alex Andrade is the driving force behind the bill, which is known as H.B. 843. In the past Governor Rick Scott has vetoed two bills like this one after both passed through the Florida legislature.
Along with ending an ex-spouse having to permanently pay alimony, the bill would change the way judges in the state of Florida are required to look at child custody cases. The bill would make it so Judges start at a 50-50 split of child custody presumption and anything beyond that would have to be challenged. This would change family court in Pensacola, FL drastically.
The bill has proven to be emotional with numerous citizens bringing their heart-wrenching stories on both sides of the issue to the subcommittee, who currently holds the bill. Many members of the subcommittee while in favor of the bill, would still like to have some additional changes added. The largest concern for the bill is the impact it could have financially on the state. Lawmakers are concerned those who rely on alimony could turn to the state for help once that source of income is taken away.
