Pensacola, Fla.- Craig Vigodsky, a criminal defense lawyer in Pensacola, FL, is reeling from news earlier this month that all Florida courtrooms will be temporarily shut down until further notice. The shut down is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is lasting far longer than most had envisioned.
According to WUFT News, “Chief Justice Charles Canady of the Florida Supreme Court issued a new order this week suspending all civil and criminal jury trials and grand jury proceedings statewide through at least April 17.”
WUFT News also shared, “In northern Florida, including Tallahassee, Pensacola and Gainesville, federal courthouses were closed to the public, and detention hearings and arraignments were held by video conference. All jury trials and grand juries were canceled through the end of the month.”
The shutdown is completely unprecedented in the nation, and legal officials, lawyers, and families everywhere are circling trying to find a way to keep the justice system intact. Without the ability to present or process cases, many families are finding their lives put on hold for the rest of the month and perhaps longer.
Craig Vigodsky has adapted to the change by primarily speaking with clients over the phone. Social distancing during this time is very important, and Craig Vigodsky wants to keep his staff and clients as safe as possible. Meeting clients face to face, whether in the office or a courtroom, would be unwise.
The child support attorney in Pensacola is proactively monitoring the courtroom shutdowns and temporary regulations. Since the shutdowns will surely continue in Pensacola through the end of the month, Craig Vigodsky’s family law firm will be staying safely at home. The law firm is thankful for technology giving them the opportunity to continue to help the people of Pensacola through these uncertain times.
